Not only is the city 800 years old this year, but it’s the European capital of Culture 2008. Joanna Doonar spends time in a rejuvenated Liverpool.

On the go: Midway between the main centre and docks is Room, a well-designed modern restaurant with a small bar. The menus are based on classic dishes form the 1970’s, but the ‘cheese on toast’ is made with mozzarella and the ‘surf and turf’ is calamari and chorizo!
