Yorkshire Evening Post - 2nd August
Ladies who lunch, celebs who snack and couples (who can afford it) are prime candidates for this city centre spot.
Usually associate with evening drinking and dining, Room on Boar Lane is not the first place springing to mind for a spot of lunch. In my case this is due to it being a rather expensive one for a snack.
And I was right. But the selling point is its fabulous outdoor square, smack bang in the middle of the city centre, making it the perfect pit-stop during a day of die-hard shopping.
This little courtyard has caught my eye on many occasions, not least because it’s quit unexpected as it sits back from the road and out of the way.
It is also ideal for catching some rays while sipping a good glass of wine – it’s a cracking sun trap. The whole place has a smart elegant feel to it and its menu aims to match this.
The lunch menu boasts anything from mixed hors d’oeuvres to share (£12.50) to Moussaka (£11.50) but you’re promised it will all come with a twist.
I went for a fish club sandwich £8.50 while my dining partner opted for an open lasagne (with seafood and spinach).
My fish club sandwich (a.k.a. fish finger butty) was absolutely delicious. The tartar sauce had a real tasty bite and I would be well prepared to fork out £8.50 on this as a special treat.
The lasagne on the other hand was seriously pitiful .For £8, my partner was handed a feeble helping of seafood (eg. A handful of mussels) rattling around in a creamy tomato sauce with a couple of wafer-style pasta circles floating on top. We really weren’t impressed. And had it not been for the superb fish sarny, we would have also been starving.
We obviously only had two dishes which were both worlds apart taste-wise so it’s difficult to judge the food here on portions and value for money.
But what Little Oliver can say is that the setting and the service is well worth writing home about and if you’re a sun-worshipper this is probably one of the best, most intimate spots in Leeds to do lunch by day.
