Room Liverpool
YQ NORTHWEST - September 07
Even if my guest hadn’t been a bank clerk, Room Liverpool’s former purpose would have been easily identifiable by its vaulted ceilings and ornate glass dome. Located within the 62 Castle Street boutique hotel, it is at the heart of Liverpool’s fashionable centre close to popular celebrity haunts such as Cricket and Newz bar. A welcome edition to the increasing number of restaurant and bar hybrids, it epitomises everything that a stylish English eatery should be. While the menu is by no means limited, the retro-style dishes err on the side of simplistic, leaving the elaborate presentation to appeal to the more adventurous dinner. Perfect for those (myself included) who do not wish to sacrifice their simple tastes for an elaborate eating experience.
Despite being tempted by almost every starter, my guest and I chose to share the potato waffle with goat’s cheese and beetroot (£5) in order to guarantee sufficient room for at least one of the beautiful desserts, which had already been teasingly paraded before us. For mains, neither of us could resist sampling the traditional steak; while I opted for my 28 day aged beef (£15) in a fillet cut (supplement £5) with a Béarnaise sauce, my guest preferred the fattier sirloin with peppercorn sauce. As expected the perfectly presented portions were more substantial in size and taste alike.
Finally, it was time for dessert and the selection was overwhelming – it is at times like this that I really wish I had the digestive system of a cow. While I selected the refreshing homemade selection of ice-cream and sorbets (£5) my guest chose the crisp pavlova (£5) from the strawberry inspired summer menu. Continuing until September, this menu offers all dinners a complimentary glass of champagne and yet another reason top visit this charming restaurant.
